…sure what else would you be doing?

About

I named my blog ‘Opportunity Costs’ because it’s one of my favourite terms in economics. The true cost of something is what you give up to get it. What could I be doing if I wasn’t writing this blog? What could you be doing if you weren’t reading it? You could be learning a new language, baking a cake, or hiking. Instead, you have given up many other wonderful things to read what I write and that means a lot. Thank you!

About Me
Me with my editor, Luna.

Raised in county Leitrim – a place of inspiration to such great writers as John McGahern and Seamus O’Rourke – Ciarán displays no literary talent except for my ability to write about myself in the third person and then snap out of it.

Years ago I used to write a regular column called ‘Random Ranting’  in my college magazine. This was an opportunity to impose an incoherent stream of drivel upon unsuspecting readers. Since then, I have tried to use Twitter and pubs for ranting but Twitter’s word count is very limiting and pubs have too many exits.

There will be no constant theme throughout this blog. My interests are broad and include politics, economics, climate change, dogs, trains, and scones. No doubt you’ll find me waffling on other topics too. Some posts will be satirical. Some will try to be satirical. Some posts will be researched. Others will be like a Healy Rae Dáil speech but won’t cost you as much.

Changing minds

By its nature, a blog screams ‘I’ve something important to say’, but really I hope this blog comes across as curious, openminded, and sometimes enlightening. I hope it changes minds occasionally too, including my own.
